I could see that guy in the paddock eating the most delicious hay but it looked as though it was actually already eaten most of it. I brought out my brushes combs and some showsheen for Duke's tail and mane. He looked amazing actually, his coat is fabulous. Looking pretty healthy. I spent lots of time with him in the paddock. Doc sort of acts like a jerk. I had a bag of cut up apples but they were for some ground work in the arena. I brought Duke out and he really liked it. We walked around a bit and then I brought him in the arena. Kristen was doing stuff with.

Raychel moved Saturday so and Sunday was our day
After last week I wasn't going to do too much, meaning just exercising is ok with me and Duke. I went over to the barn at like 1130am. I was planning to meet with Raychel at her work at around 2:30 to drop off stuff and hang out for 30min. So I got over to see Duke and decided to do some outside work and some ground work. He was hanging out in the paddock. I pulled up and parked next to the hay barn. its the right place to park for me.

Beautiful day until Duke fell hard
Here is Duke eating while I wait for Krystyn to help me figure out why Duke after a nice slow warm up, reared up spooky and then fell on hisright side into a deep icey puddle, quickly pulled himself up. We stood quietly and he eat. In 2 seconds after telling Bonnie that I thought something strange happened, Krystyn was by my side. She examined him immediately and saw that his front fetlock, and knee also ankle was warm. She told me the plan, get him in his new blanket, give him some Bute and keep him in his stall. I started to see if we could walk baclk to the stable, we were right niext to the hay barn. He gave me a sign that he needed a minute. I stood with I'm for about 5 minutes and then I walked with him back to his stall, Krystyn was there and she had the oats and the Bute was in the bucket. I didn't even realize it she was so fast. She was giving me the info on what do to with the ice packs that Kristin Mc has that I could use. It all happened so fast.
I'm going to go over today. Ill add the pics later.

40+ Sunny in the paddock Tacked and walkin w/Safari in arena
Valerie and Laurie visited today at the end of our ride in the arena. Duke was with Safari and it was really nice I'd like to ride again with them good visit today took was a good boy.
Anyway Krystyn was in the office. She seemed happy, I asked about Bonnie, she said shes getting a little bit better, she might be driving soon. I have seen Fred so so many great things for the family. I appreciate those guys a lot.
After I tacked up and was going to get on in the arena. I need to position Duke a certain way, and then I do give him an apple piece and then I jump on while I am
I know that Stace doesn't really like them. Jess was in the arena with me for a while and I really liked it. Duke was doing some walking around warming up. Duke was just getting his 1mile in. Just keeping fit. Hes my little old man.
When Laurie and Val got to the barn, they were all over Duke, touching him, loving him. He was totally into the attendtion he was getting. It was nice. I guess I was thinking that I had worked and tacked up Duke I wish they didn't come today.
Back to the story. We came in and I used the cross ties, I put him on and grabbed the saddle and pad. Its nice to have Duke feeling good. I didn't want to put on his bridle, I like just not having it on in the arena. He doesn't need to have a bit when we are just hanging out. Still its just us in the barn. I can just talk to Duke as we get tacked up. When the hay is in the aisles and Duke is cross ties he tries to get the snacking in. I love the goats being next to Duke. I give them some peanut butter crackers and they snack em up quick. The time iwht Duke today in the arena was pretty good but it was really nice to have Safari in with us. Duke was happy to ride on the outside. Safari in the inside. Duke pepped up and he rode along. Safari started to pay attention to Duke and wanted to hang out and get attention too. I didn't take any pictures of him but I did enjoy him. I would like to go out soon with Safari in the field. I went along a few more times and then jumped off so that I could talk to Val and Laurie. I jumped down. and got to take Duke down to his stall. I think htat having someone visit makes it harder for me to enjoy myself. Whats happening here, I don't like my time with Duke being any less than what I have planned in my head for the day. My quality time in the field or anyplace is so valuable.
I was talking to Laurie about how Duke's age might be less than I had thought or what I was told. Hes a lot older. Dave thinks hes about 24, this might be a few less years than I thought. Ultimately this may be that we have less time together. This makes my heart ache but also makes me realize that every day is a gift. The death of Winston made me understand just how hard it is to let go of a sweet friend when the story has an ending. Although the gift of love is an amazing and strong. I'm so pleased even when I have a hard time. I have to many goals. I will make a post of the different things that we want to do together.

Cold Sunny afternoon walk in the fields and arena
Heading out to see Duke. I knew I wouldn't be riding, I wanted to spend some time with Duke make sure he was out in this beautiful day that was cold icey but beautiful. I had my phone full of pictures so I would not be taking too many. As I drove up, I could see Duke in the paddock. Hes happy.
Earlier in the day Laurie had asked if she could meet me at Greenwood this weekend. I planned on tomorrow at 12 noon. Today I wanted freedom to come and go when I wanted. I grabbed my bag of cut up apples that I have been doing lately. It works training with a sweet boy and apples.
I brought out our brushes and the Showsheen was frozen solid. Just brushing would be ok. His tail is really falling apart at the top of it. It makes him not look at good. Hes been rubbing his butt against the stall. He does it out of nerves being in too long I think.
| Muke looking for attention while I was with Duke, he reached over to get some apple while I was there |
I spend a lot of time out there brushing underneath, along his legs, tail, face, neck, mane and head hair. He looked great. He just grazed on his grass hay. Happily, he continued to eat and move gently forward into the pile of hay. Doc was kinda ok, he had backed off a bit as I was working with Duke. The floor of the paddock was layered with solid ice and crusty snow on top of the grass and soil including the poop.
| The poop with an icy coating and then a thin layer of snow almost looked like a desert. |
I went into the arena for a short while to walk to warm Duke up. I know he was happy at the paddock but I wanted to stretch his legs. I feel sorry for the horses that don't get to exercise outside. I think that the standing in the paddock isn't as good as moving around. It as cold but seemed to be getting warmer in the sun. I had a few layers on but didn't have any long johns. I didn't ever have a hat, just gloves. As we walked around I could see that Duke wanted to roll so I shut down the arena and put up the boards. Duke followed me around a bit, knew that I had snacks so he followed me a bit. He finally after a few times of following me and walking began to act like he was going to roll. I have to make sure I look bored like I'm not getting any treats out of my pocket. As sooon as I saw that he was forgetting me and started to turn around and then spin back and make that sound. A huge breath exhaled into the cold air of the arena. Then suddenly he is on the ground rolling.
We kept walking back to the barn, then Jess and Kristen came driving by in Jess's car. They were on their way to do the feeding. I was hoping to keep Duke was out for a long enough time. It worked out. The girl how reminds me of Sarah was riding her horse. I'm not sure what horse it is. Maybe Rebel. She was in the Arena when I got there riding happy.
In the arena we walked around while he was on the lead line, I had to be more strict with him making sure he continued to walk. Earlier he was not very disciplined, In the second time in the arena I was making sure that we had gotten the 1mile plus. This way I can make sure that hes getting his legs stretched. Tomorrow I may have a ride with him before the rain, if I'm lucky. We moved all over the play and he ran around.
Duke went over to the sliding door while we were working out in the arena and he did that thing he does, he pushed hard on the edges to get out. I was on the other side of the arena and saw that he was pushing in the doorway. The door slide a bit and I think he could have had the door open if he was there any longer. Hes like a pushy guy. I yelled at him and told him to stop, he pulled away a bit. I was able to take a picture of him as he pulled away.

Wed 3pm 50 degrees pm visit
Dave I was so happy to see him. He said that the horses had been in since he got there. So the horses were in because of the snow, what snow it wasn't even a trace. Since Bonnie broke her hip I think that things have gotten terrible. Her son doesn't help any more in the mornings do the stalls. This puts them at a disadvantage.
After he left, Kristin Mc came to feed the horses, shes a good person. she loves animals so much. She said that both of her horses were lame. This really upset me. But she said that her leaser crapped out of the lease of Kinsey. She couldn't tell her husband because hes starting a new job. I talked to her a lot. About how she takes feedings and that she likes it. She does 3 of the feedings, 2 nights and one day. She said its easier than other barns she has worked at. She also was not happy that the horses had not gone out. I had been grooming Duke during his shoeing so I was ready to take him out. I brought him into the arena and we walked a bit about 3 times around. Then he did a beautiful dramatic roll, I had to put up the board because I thought he was going to run around, just wanted to roll.
Then into the outside ring where he grazed on the hay that was there from the other day. While he was in the outside ring, I was able to go over the what needed to be done. Paid DAve, Paid Bonnie and then put the pills in the bottle in the office.
We trotted into the barn, I was walking at a good pace but Duke raises his legs so high when hes proud and walking with me into the barn. He makes me feel so good I smile like no one has ever seen. I'm so fortunate. One more thing Dave mentioned that he guessed that Duke was 24 years old or so.
This made me think, life is short if hes 25 hes got a few years left but honestly not that many. 5 or 6? The years go by so fast. Hes a wonderful boy and hes made my life amazing. <3 Long Live Duke.
